Ilse van de Kasteelen studeerde fagot en solo-zang aan de conservatoria van Hilversum en Amsterdam. In 1983 werd zij door Taller Amsterdam gevraagd enkele delen te componeren voor hun produktie The Desert. Vele producties volgden en mondden uit in haar kameropera’s Los Heraldos en De Steek van een Schorpioen, beide opdrachten van het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst.
Na vele muziektheaterprodukties, na het verbonden zijn aan Taller Amsterdam, kwamen de laatste jaren concertstukken; koorwerken, een solo voor mezzo-sopraan, de Cyclus Serenade de Retour voor bas-bariton en piano en de kameropera 'The meeting' (Elizabeth I en Mary Stuart) voor 2 sopranen, blaasinstrumenten, slagwerk en strijkers. Hiervoor werd zij achteraf gehonoreerd door Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst, en recent een solo voor harp, Hunab K’U , in opdracht van Godelieve Schrama en het Fonds Podiumkunsten.
Zij werd bij het componeren geadviseerd door onder andere Ton de Leeuw en Elgar Howarth, en op het gebied van instrumenteren onder andere Lucas door Vis, Harry Sparnaay, Leo van Oostrom en Godelieve Schrama.
Er worden voorbereidingen getroffen voor een stuk voor sopraan en mezzo-sopraan ( overige bezetting nog nader te bepalen).
